Connecting schools to Hospitality programme

In partnership with Leeds Hotels and Venues Association we successfully delivered the Connecting Schools to Hospitality Programme.

The programme launched in January 2024, partnering 6 schools with 6 hotels, throughout the programme, students have participated in a diverse array of engaging activities at both schools and hotels, including bed-making competitions and mocktail making to cake decorating, pizza making, events management, mock interviews and much more.

The programmes objective was to introduce school students to the world of hotels, venues, and hospitality. We created a programme aimed at enhancing their understanding of the industry's career prospects and providing them with enriching experiences that would motivate them to pursue hospitality careers.

In 2022, the retail and visitor economy sector employed over 69,000 individuals, with the trend indicating sector growth due to increased investment in the city and surrounding areas.

The pandemic led to a notable decline in young people's opportunities to engage with employers and gain industry exposure. The 'Schools and Hospitality' initiative bridged this gap by pairing hotels or venues with schools to curate a series of activities that not only raised awareness about the industry but also inspired students to consider hospitality careers.

The hospitality industry can offer a wide range of opportunities across all levels with possibilities for career progression from entry level to managerial positions. Connecting school to hospitality sector has clear aims to

  • To establish clear talent pathways by promoting progression routes and fostering better collaboration across the city.
  • To enhance the quality of career education, ensuring that young people are well-informed, motivated, and equipped to secure employment in the city.
  • To highlight to young people that they can build a successful career in Leeds, showcasing the vast and varied opportunities the city has to offer.

The “Schools and Hospitality” programme has been measured in line with the Gatsby Benchmarks with 7 out of the 8 criteria’s encountered during the programme.  The opportunity has taken young people on a journey to understanding the hospitality sector, careers and future pathways.

Leeds City College generously provided a venue for the celebration event at their Printworks campus. All students who participated were acknowledged with a certificate to commemorate their involvement in the programme.  Each hotel recognized a 'Shining Star' for their exceptional accomplishments during the programme, with special presentations from Beckett University and Leeds City College outlining various post-16 educational pathways. Beckett University provided valuable insights into the global hospitality industry. Meanwhile, Leeds City College staff offered attendees a tour of the college's hospitality and catering facilities, which proved to be highly popular, attracting over 60 participants.
